Muslim Aid: Bantuan Makanan dan Perubatan di Teruskan di Somalia

Alhamdulillah, pada 3 September 2011, rangkaian Muslim Aid antarabangsa melalui pejabat Muslim Aid Somalia telah menyampaikan bantuan makanan kepada 1.400 keluarga di sekitar daerah Bay dan Jamame yang telah diisytiharkan sebagai zon kebuluran. Pertubuhan Bangsa-bangsa Bersatu (PBB) telah menyatakan bahawa sehingga 750,000 orang boleh mati sebagai menjadi lebih teruk kemarau Somalia dalam bulan-bulan akan datang.

Pada 29 Ogos 2011, Muslim Aid mengagihkan bantuan makanan kepada 260 keluarga di dalam kawasan Baidoa. Muslim Aid dan juga menjalankan program pemakanan di pusat-pusat yang berpangkalan di Madinah dan Afgoye Juba, yang telah dilaporkan telah menerima jumlah yang tinggi dari kalangan wanita dan kanak-kanak yang memerlukan rawatan.

Jumlah IDP (mangsa kebuluran) di Mogadishu masih kekal tinggi dan pelarian baru tiba setiap hari dalam jumlah yang agak besar. Harga makanan terus meningkat pada kadar yang membimbangkan. Penyakit cirit-birit, malaria, anemia, kekurangan zat makanan dan kudis kekal adalah antara penyakit yang sirius menyerang mangsa kebuluran.

Pada 28 Ogos 2011 pasukan Muslim Aid telah mengedarkan barangan makanan kepada lebih 1,600 keluarga di kawasan dilanda kebuluran seperti Garowe, Puntland, Tarbuunka dan Kem Wardhigley , Mogadishu, Hargeisa dan Somaliland. Pada hari yang sama, pasukan Mercy Malaysia juga telah melawat gudang tempat penyimpanan barang bantuan Muslim Aid.

Atas tajaan dari OIC, pasukan Muslim Aid telah mengedarkan barangan makanan kecemasan kepada 1400 keluarga, di rantau Jamame Daerah Juba. Barangan makanan juga telah diedarkan kepada 972 keluarga di Kismayo, dan 250 keluarga di Abudwaq.

Bantuan kecemasan untuk saudara kita di Somalia dan masih ramai memerlukan bantuan asas makanan dan ubat-ubatan. Update from Somalia - Muslim Aid is on the ground delivering aid

Muslim Aid began distribution of emergency aid on July 10 in Mogadishu, handing out food packs, water and kitchen utensils to around 1000 people on the first day of distribution. The first stage is targeting IDP camps in Mogadishu and Afgoye corridor, a region of Somalia with already alarming high numbers of internally displaced people. After Afghanistan and Iraq, Somalia is the third largest refugee-producing country in the world.

There are acute levels of hunger and malnutrition as food prices continue to escalate, with women, children and elderly increasingly vulnerable. Muslim Aid’s Country Director Ahmed Abdi Muhummed said: ” currently the drought is resulting in around 2500 people entering Mogadishu every day. Many people are travelling hundreds of kilometers on foot; one lady left her house with six children, sadly she arrived with only two.”

Muslim Aid has launched an urgent emergency appeal to provide humanitarian relief to people affected by the severe drought and malnutrition occurring in the countries of eastern Horn of Africa.

An estimated 10 million people in Djibouti, Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Sudan are at risk of starvation. A shortage of food, water and medicines, made worse by persistent drought conditions in the region have forced thousands of people to flee their homes and seek refuge in camps in Mogadishu, as well as on the border of Northern Kenya and Ethiopia.

Launching the appeal, a Muslim Aid spokesperson said: “The onslaught of draught in eastern Horn of Africa is not an overnight disaster event. It has been building up for months. Food and water reserves in these countries have depleted to the extent that governments are unable to meet the needs of their populations. Livestock are dying and food supplies have collapsed. Hundreds of villages have been totally abandoned. The time has come for the international community to take notice of this alarming situation and act fast to help the affected people before it is too late.”

“Muslim Aid Field Offices in Somalia and Kenya are providing relief to the refugees. Muslim Aid appeals to its donors and partner institutions to urgently come to the aid of the victims of drought and save precious lives.”

Devastating Earthquake and Tsunami Hit Japan

A devastating tsunami and earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale, hit the north-east coast of Japan on Friday 11th March, claiming over 2,000 lives so far. In what is seen as the country’s biggest earthquake in its history, the death count is rising as Japan’s Government starts its emergency relief.

The extent of the destruction across Japan is slowly becoming clear as a further 10,000 people are feared dead or missing after the tremor triggered a tsunami that swept through cities, towns and villages. Towns such as Saito have been completely wiped out due to the Tsunami; although the country’s capital, Tokyo has escaped relatively unscathed. Around 450,000 people have been staying in temporary shelters.

While relief operations are underway, a state of emergency has been declared as the country still faces possible nuclear disaster. Tremors from the earthquake caused reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to become unstable causing two explosions over the past few days and sending low but alarming levels of radiation into Tokyo.

Muslim Aid is monitoring the situation closely and has been in contact with partners in the region to discuss the needs of the affected people.

Pakistani Flood Emergency Appeal

Raging floods have swept through northwest Pakistan, causing death and destruction on a disastrous scale. More than 1,600 people have been killed so far and some 12 million affected by the devastation. With monsoon rains continuing to fall, this figure is expected to rise as the worst floods to hit Pakistan in 80 years, threaten the southern Sindh province.

More than half a million people are being evacuated by the Pakistani authorities in anticipation of this, but with roads and bridges destroyed and many areas submerged, relief efforts have struggled to reach those in need.

Muslim Aid has launched an Emergency Appeal in order to provide medicines, clean water, tents and emergency items and are currently on the ground helping to distribute this much needed relief.

* 650 flood affected people treated in two days at medical camps in sub-districts of Rajarr, Utmanzai and Tangi of district Charsadda.

* 12,000 litres clean drinking water distributed among the 500 families of district Charsadda and Nowshera.

* 200,000 Aqua Tabs distributed in Rajarr and Utmanzai of Charsadda and 2 sub-districts of Nowshera Kalaan of district Nowshera.

* To date, 750 jerry cans (10 litres) and buckets (10 litres) have been distributed amongst 750 families.

* Juice and biscuits were distributed among 4,000 people over one weekend.
